The six goals of the US government according to the Preamble to the Constitution are: 1) to form a more perfect Union, 2) to establish Justice, 3) to insure domestic Tranquility, 4) to provide for the common defence, 5) to promote the general Welfare, and 6) to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. The Constitution limits the powers of government through the separation of powers into three branches (legislative, executive, judicial), checks and balances, federalism (division of power between the federal and state governments), and through the Bill of Rights, which protects individual liberties against government infringement.
